Baal Prime
The fortress world where the Iron Warriors turned traitor and loyalists bled.
Baal Prime stands as the grim homeworld of the XX Legion, known universally as the Iron Warriors. During the Great Crusade and the subsequent Horus Heresy, this world was transformed by Primarch Perturabo into a fortress planet designed solely for warfare and industrial production rather than habitation. It served as the Legion's primary staging ground before their betrayal of the Emperor. The planet is infamous within Imperial history for being the site of one of the earliest and most brutal sieges of the Heresy. After the Iron Warriors declared allegiance to Horus, loyalist forces moved to contain them here, resulting in a catastrophic conflict that left the surface scarred and the system quarantined.

Lore & Background
Under the direction of Perturabo, Baal Prime was stripped of all natural beauty and repurposed into a machine of war. The landscape is dominated by vast fortifications, automated defense grids, and sprawling manufactoria that churned out siege weaponry for the Crusade. This environment reflected the Legion's doctrine: patience, endurance, and the belief that walls are stronger than swords. When the Heresy began, Baal Prime became a focal point of conflict. Loyalist fleets blockaded the system to prevent the Iron Warriors from reinforcing Horus at Terra. The resulting siege was a nightmare of orbital bombardment and trench warfare. Traitor Astartes utilized their deep bunker networks to survive constant bombardment, while loyalists suffered heavy casualties attempting to breach the defenses. The conflict ended not with a decisive victory but with a stalemate that allowed the Iron Warriors to eventually break out or remain hidden within the ruins. The world was left in such a state of ruin and potential corruption that it became forbidden territory for the Imperium, serving as a dark reminder of the Legion's treachery.
In Their Own Story
The sky above Baal Prime burned with the light of dying stars. From the trenches carved into the basalt crust, Sergeant Vaelen watched another orbital strike tear through the enemy lines. Dust choked the air, tasting of sulfur and old blood. The walls of the fortress city loomed ahead, scarred by las-fire and heavy plasma. Somewhere within those depths, the traitors waited, silent as stone. "Hold," his vox whispered. "They are digging deeper." Vaelen tightened his grip on his boltgun. On Baal Prime, there was no glory in victory, only the grim necessity of survival against a world built to kill.
Reader's Guide
Baal Prime served as a critical logistical hub for the Iron Warriors during the Great Crusade, functioning less as a settlement and more than an industrial engine of war. Its strategic value lay in its impregnable fortifications and massive shipyards, allowing the Legion to project power across the Segmentum Obscurus without relying on external supply lines. Environmentally, the world is a harsh hellscape of acid rain, toxic smog, and endless concrete sprawl, designed to break weak wills rather than sustain life. The defining conflict was the Siege of Baal Prime early in the Horus Heresy. After the Legion’s betrayal became known, loyalist forces blockaded the system. The ensuing battle was a grueling war of attrition where orbital bombardments shattered the surface defenses. Traitor Astartes fought from deep bunkers while loyalists paid heavily for every meter gained against the entrenched enemy. In the current 40th Millennium, Baal Prime remains a forbidden zone within the Imperium. The devastation caused during the siege left much of the crust unstable and potentially contaminated by Chaos energies. Imperial Navy charts mark it as lost territory, avoided due to the risk of encountering lingering cults or rogue Legion remnants hiding within the ruins.
