Historically known as Earth, it serves as the seat of power where the Emperor ruled during the Great Crusade and later became the site of the final conflict of the Horus Heresy. During the rebellion, this sacred planet was transformed into a fortress under siege by Traitor Legions seeking to overthrow the God-Emperor. Lore & Background

During the Great Crusade, Terra was the staging ground for humanity's reunification under the Emperor's banner. It housed the vast Imperial Palace, a sprawling complex that served as both government center and military command hub. The Emperor intended to complete the Webway Project from this location before the betrayal of Horus Lupercal shattered his plans. The Siege of Terra marked the climax of the Heresy, where loyalist forces defended the capital against overwhelming odds. Traitor Legions poured into orbit and breached the surface defenses, turning the Holy City into a slaughterhouse. The battle ended only when Horus was defeated on the Golden Throne's steps, sealing his fate and leaving the Emperor in a state of eternal vigilance. Following the Heresy, Terra became a forbidden zone for all but the highest authorities. Its history is now steeped in religious dogma, with the physical planet treated as the holy center of the Imperium of Man.

In Their Own Story

The sky above the Palace was choked with ash and fire. From the observation deck, the loyalist guard watched the orbital bombardment strip away the clouds, revealing the burning hulk of a Traitor dreadnought crashing into the city below. The air smelled of ozone and old blood. Somewhere deep beneath their feet, the Golden Throne hummed its silent song, holding back the darkness that sought to consume the Emperor's soul.

Reader's Guide

Strategically, Terra serves as the absolute command center of humanity, housing the Imperial Palace where the Emperor once ruled directly. Its location in the Sol System makes it the logistical heart of the Great Crusade before becoming the final objective for the Traitor Legions during the Heresy. The planet is surrounded by massive orbital defense grids and shield generators designed to repel any invasion fleet. During the Siege, these defenses were overwhelmed by the sheer scale of Horus's assault, forcing loyalist forces into desperate ground combat within the Holy City itself. The Imperial Palace became a fortress amidst a war zone. In the current 41st Millennium timeline, Terra remains under a protective Dome that shields the surface from radiation and chaos corruption. It is now known as Holy Terra, where the Golden Throne sits at the center of the Palace, sustaining the Astronomican for navigation across the galaxy. Pilgrims travel endlessly to worship the God-Emperor in this sacred soil.
