Founded by the twin Primarchs Alpharius and Omegon, who were indistinguishable from one another in life, the Alpha Legion was built on the principle that identity is fluid. Their recruits were often drawn from the most cunning and adaptable souls across the galaxy, trained to blend into any environment or culture. During the Great Crusade, they served as the Emperor's spies, uncovering plots before they could bloom, yet their methods were so covert that even other loyalist legions viewed them with suspicion. During the Horus Heresy, the Alpha Legion's actions became the stuff of legend and nightmare. They infiltrated every major battle, wearing the faces of friends to strike at critical moments. At Isstvan V, they played a pivotal role in the massacre of loyalist forces by disguising themselves as loyalists to infiltrate and cause confusion, including friendly fire incidents. However, their ultimate loyalty remains unclear; some accounts suggest they acted solely to prolong the conflict for Chaos, while others whisper that they secretly worked to preserve the Emperor's legacy through deception. Notably, Alpharius was slain by Rogal Dorn during the Battle of Pluto, while Omegon's fate remains ambiguous—some sources hint at his death at Eskrador, but no definitive account confirms it.

The Alpha Legion is a unique faction within the Horus Heresy narrative, distinguished by its focus on subterfuge rather than direct confrontation. Their primary goal appears to be the manipulation of events to serve an unknown agenda, whether that be Chaos, the Emperor, or something else entirely. Members of the legion are elite operatives trained in disguise, sabotage, and psychological warfare. They can mimic the appearance of any other Space Marine, making them nearly impossible to detect until it is too late. This ability has made them both feared and mistrusted by their allies and enemies alike. In the conflict of the Heresy, they played a dual role: openly supporting Horus while secretly undermining him, or vice versa. Their true allegiance remains one of the greatest mysteries of the War in Heaven, with some believing they may have been working to ensure the survival of humanity through any means necessary.
