When found by the Emperor, Mortarion initially resisted integration into the Imperial forces, viewing them as weak and hypocritical for trying to 'cleanse' his world rather than understanding its harsh realities. His legion became known for their ability to withstand conditions that would kill any other warrior, wearing heavy armor that sealed them against poison and disease. Despite his loyalty during the early crusades, Mortarion's resentment festered when he felt slighted by the Emperor's refusal to grant him a place on Terra or acknowledge the unique nature of his homeworld. This sense of betrayal made him an easy target for the schemes of Horus Lupercal and the Ruinous Powers.
