Blackstone Fortress

An ancient vault of the Old Night, contested by Heresy's fiercest warriors.

The Blackstone Fortress is a massive, enigmatic structure discovered during the height of the Horus Heresy. Originally an artifact from the Age of Darkness, it serves as both a prison and a vault for ancient technology predating the Imperial Truth. Its discovery triggered a desperate conflict where Loyalist and Traitor forces briefly cooperated before turning on one another to claim or destroy its secrets.

Lore & Background

Constructed during humanity's earliest days before the Great Crusade, the Blackstone Fortress represents technology lost to time. It emits a signal that draws both Imperial and Chaos forces alike, promising power or salvation depending on who seeks it. Inside its labyrinthine halls lie weapons and data capable of altering the balance of the war, guarded by automated defenses and Warp-touched anomalies. The fortress became the focal point of a unique coalition task force comprising Space Marines from various Legions, including Ultramarines and Salamanders, alongside Word Bearers. This uneasy alliance dissolved quickly as the true nature of the Blackstone was revealed. Ultimately, Loyalist commanders realized that allowing such power to exist risked corruption or exploitation by Chaos, leading to a final decision to scuttle the station before it could be seized.

In Their Own Story

The void outside was silent, save for the hum of the void shields. Captain Rhanom stared at the monolith looming in the distance, its black hull absorbing the light of distant stars. It did not feel like metal; it felt like a wound in reality, pulsing with a rhythm that matched the heartbeat of the galaxy itself. Inside, the air was stale, recycled through filters older than the Imperium. He tightened his grip on his chainsword, knowing that whatever waited within this tomb would test the limits of faith and steel.

Reader's Guide

The Blackstone Fortress originated in the pre-Imperial Age of Darkness, constructed by human engineers wielding technology now lost to the Mechanicus. Its metaphysical properties include a resonance with the Warp, allowing it to communicate across vast distances while shielding its interior from detection. During the Heresy, potential wielders included the Ultramarines and Salamanders seeking to secure it for Terra, against the Word Bearers who desired its power for their masters. The presence of the fortress threatened to shift the war's momentum significantly if fully activated by either side. Ultimately, the catastrophic impact was mitigated through destruction. Loyalist forces chose to scuttle the station rather than risk its secrets falling into Chaos hands. This decision prevented a potential weapon from empowering the Traitor Legions, though it meant losing knowledge that could have aided the Imperium in the long term.
