While loyalist Astartes fought with honor, traitor legions began to display these signs openly. The Word Bearers were particularly noted for concealing and then revealing elaborate tattoos beneath their armor, symbols of their pact with the entities in the Warp. These marks are not merely ink or flesh; they are conduits. The Mark of Chaos is not an object to be wielded like a sword or shield, but a condition of existence accepted by the corrupted. It functions as a permanent conduit for Warp energy, allowing the bearer to access powers denied to mortal flesh. To receive the mark, a soul must first willingly submit to the influence of the Ruinous Powers. This often happens through ritualistic sacrifice, exposure to daemonic entities, or deep psychological breakage during battle. Once accepted, the physical manifestation appears gradually, starting as discoloration before hardening into tattoos or mutations. Who wields it? Primarily the Traitor Legions and their followers. The Word Bearers historically utilized these marks most extensively as a sign of unity and faith. However, any human or Astartes who falls to Chaos may eventually bear such a sign. It serves as both a badge of honor for the traitor and a warning label for the loyalist. The mark grants resilience against psychic attacks from rival factions but makes the bearer vulnerable to exorcism and holy fire. It is irreversible; once the flesh accepts the corruption, no medical science can remove it without destroying the host.
